This book is a modern and new take on witchcraft and what it means to be a witch today in this new modern world Lately there has been a huge surge in these types of books and and women are coming out and are okay with saying they are a witch in whatever way they may define that This book takes the same perspective and lays out some basics of being a witch and details how the author sees both being a witch and witchcraft This book offers a lot to its readers by covering topics like Tarot using crystals and herbs moon magick astrology and how to write a grimoire Each chapter is highly researched and is written for a modern witchThere is a lot of information in this book when you read it it feels like each chapter could be its own book just on the specific topic What I did like about this book is how useful everything feels and how it seems like the author really cares about getting her message and info across This book truly feels like a uick introduction to what being a witch could look like or entail This isn t a book I would read for some in depth knowledge on the Tarot or any of the other topics in this book but is something I would give to someone who is young and dabbling or curious This is a book I would buy my niece or nephew as a primer Regardless I m glad I read it because these sorts of things do trigger my memory and remind me of things that maybe I am or was curious about and have since forgotten Something about this book that really bothered me was the author s use of things that are culturally appropriated To be fair I did read this book just after I read another that was very conscious about this sort of thing and actively encouraged readers to avoid rhetoric that involved things that have been appropriated or stolen from native cultures as a way to combat imperialism Witchery by Juliet Diaz Where that book actively called those things out this book really doesn t mention the conflicted past related to these things and mentions them as if there is not problems related While it is important to me that young adults and everyone be educated and be able to read a book about witchcraft it is also our responsibility to pass on information about cultural appropriation when we see it as a way not just to teach about atrocities committed by western culture but also as a way to show people that they can be active and they can speak out against negativity and ultimately have a voice I was really upset and bothered that the author of this book doesn t even attempt to address this when certainly others haveOverall I would give this book a couple stars less just because of the non activist or informed stance that both the book and apparently the author have I wish that as an introduction those things would have been mentioned It is not okay to buy smudge kits from a chain store that were made using endangered white sage and palo santo collected in a way that hurts the source tree In fact maybe we should voice that it isn t okay to package culture and sell it in a way that is disrespectful I love that this book seeks to be a concise introduction but misses the mark on that point Towards a Comprehensive Theory of Human Learning Lifelong Learning and the Learning Society reconnect with herself After all empowered women The Illusion of Gods Presence run the world and they’re probably witches.
