Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for an advanced copy I voluntarily reviewed this book All opinions expressed are my ownI Have No SecretsBy Penny Joelson REVIEW Imagine someone casually telling you they committed murder because they know you won t tell anyone else This is Jemma s situation in I Have No Secrets Jemma is 16 with severe cerebral palsy Although at a normal intelligence level she cannot move or speak This makes her the perfect sounding board for any and all confessions People tell Jemma their deep dark secrets with confidence because who is she going to tell Exactly Jemma however desperately needs to communicate the identity of a murderer Fortunately technology becomes accessible that will allow her to speak Will the killer silence Jemma forever or will she tell the devastating truth This is such a uniue and profound idea to build a story upon and I was completely absorbed in the story Jemma is an excellent character She is smart and intuitive and trapped inside her own body It s a terrible reality to even contemplate Jemma s disability doesn t make her less of a person just a different kind of person and she is vastly underestimated This is an important story and I m glad to have read it

Most of us have some limitation and we are prone to lamenting them from time to time Imagine that your limitation is so profound it not only prohibits you from lamenting it makes you completely dependent upon others Meet Jemma born with cerebral palsy She s unable to move or speak but inside her uncooperative body is a sharp and very frustrated mind She lives in a long term foster home with two other younger kids Finn who has autism and Olivia who is incredibly insecure and prone to temper tantrums Jemma has a personal aide Sarah who she loves and who provides wonderful care Too bad Sarah has poor taste in boyfriends One of them makes the mistake of taunting Jemma with information that could be extremely dangerous to him should she ever be able to communicate When that miracle comes about Jemma not only enters a whole new world she becomes at risk herself Read the story and find out not only why but experience what it s like to be smart on the inside but be seen in a completely different way by much of the world The author does an excellent job of showing Jemma s way of looking at the world while creating a tension filled mystery It s a great read and is deserving of a place in many libraries

I Have No Secrets is told in first person by Jemma who is unable to communicate with anyone around her she can t even move her eyes I really liked that the book showed me a new perspective I ve never really thought about what life might be like in that situation or read a book told from that point of view You really see how powerless Jemma isOne of the big problems for her is that she s really uncomfortable with her carer s boyfriend Since the carer Sarah lives in Dan comes round to their house often and makes fun of Jemma when he s alone in a room with her Early on in the story he implies to Jemma that he s responsible for the murder of a young man who lives on her street Then Sarah goes missing Of course Jemma suspects Dan but she has absolutely no way to tell anyone else about what he d said to herWhile I did want to know what had happened to Sarah I have to admit that I got a bit bored reading this book By her very nature Jemma is a passive narrator The plot moves forwards as people talk about things within Jemma s hearing Someone goes off to do something comes back and talks about it For the majority of the book things happen around Jemma not because of her and I found that very slow and not particularly exciting So much of the action in the main plot thread the murder investigation happens off page It really emphasises the struggle Jemma has each day which is great for broadening the horizons of the reader but it s not so good at making the story engaging Overall I have to give this 5 out of 10 It s an interesting idea but I don t think it worked to make an exciting book and when it s focussed on a murder investigation I think the story ought to be exciting Review first posted on my book blog link is in my profile A copy of the book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review
