Maybe I shouldn t give this first in the series 5 stars but 4 12 isn t an option and since I am halfway through the second of the series I decided it was time to stop for a moment and write this review I have read others of this genre and yes some may be better Yet this is a definite ReadTo think that a 14 15 year old is seeking to become a king and does it so well is amazing He is not a perfect which is a good thing it allows us to relate to him He struggles to learn and remember his homeland and its people He shows wisdom beyond his years and mercy that displays his faith Although the mercy he shows is not always in his best interest he is man enough to admit it and face the conseuencesIn addition I appreciate the author explaining and detailing the differences between his fictional telling and historical records

Having only recently developed an interest in the Viking history myself I was enthralled by this book before I even started to read the first page I thought there was a strong chance that I would enjoy it but had no idea uite so much God s Hammer follows Hakon Haraldsson a royal Viking heir who is sent to England away from the destruction that his brother Erik is weilding after inheriting their father s throne The beginning part of the book had me hooked straight away as we witness the internal struggles within the young Northman as he is doctrined into the Christian faith When the time comes for him to return to the North to oppose his brother and try to claim the kingdom for his own the excitement and tension really ramps upI wasn t aware until I read the author s closing notes that Hakon actually existed but come the end I was not at all surprised I was uickly immersed into the scenery and struggles that arise a true testament to the level of dedication in Eric Schumacher s researchAll in all an absolutely brilliant read Those who love historical fiction will fall for this book straight away Those who don t need to discover this book I shall definitely be buying the next instalment very soon
